Cleanse time! My partner, Wilson, and I are on a mission to clean out and heal up our guts. It involves a 21-day meat and vegetable-based diet with little fruit and zero grains or legumes, which includes my all-time favorite, peanut butter. As if my diet isn’t limiting enough already… But the point of this cleans is to eliminate all inflammatory foods and potential sensitivities while supplying the body with only the raw materials it needs for healing and repair. For example, the body uses protein from clean animal products for detoxification, rebuilding of gut lining, and for the production of hormones, antioxidants from berries, apples and vegetables help reverse the aging process by combating free-radicals, and vitamins and minerals replenish deficiencies and act as cofactors for hundreds of processes in the body. The coolest part about all this is that, once we give the body what it needs, it knows exactly what to do with it!
Wilson decided to join me on this nutritional endeavor because he has some pesky issues too, like canker sores that seem to come and go as they please. They got so bad recently that he said, “At this point, I’ll try anything!”
When we started planning for this cleanse, three weeks seemed like a long time… but, healing doesn’t happen overnight. After all, I’m fixing an intricate system that has taken years and years of (unintentional) abuse from stress, celiac, parasites, and unidentified food allergies. So yes, it will take some time, perhaps many months. But the rewards are worth it! No more abdominal pain or smelly, unladylike gas, and radiant energy? Yes please, I’ll work for that!
So, here we are, one week into the cleanse and it’s been really good! The food is delicious. I don’t have any cravings and every meal is fresh, flavorful, and satisfying. We get to eat nothing but delicious home-made, organic food for three weeks! Now that doesn’t sound too shabby! The recipes I’ve been referencing, courtesy of Erin Livers of Roots, my former nutrition teacher at Bauman College, are SO good! I’ve even come up with some new ideas that I'll share in an upcoming blog.
It’s a little early to start noticing changes, but I will say that for me, my skin is much softer and I’m not experiencing any abdominal pain. Any! Before now, this was a nightly occurrence for me. Wilson reported having more energy and thinking much clearer. He said, “this diet isn’t nearly as hard as I thought it would be and the food is excellent! I could eat like this all the time.” Well, there you go now then. I attribute most of the positive changes to the anti-inflammatory, allergen-free diet, but I have to gives some credit to the supplements as well. A high-quality probiotic and some gut-repairing L-glutamine are essential.

I was curious about how much money each meal cost on a diet like this. After all, we are buying primarily organic products. People often say that eating healthy, let alone eating organic, is expensive and unaffordable. But is it? The two of us together spent $240 for a week’s worth of food. That comes out to be around $6.67 per meal for 6 days (this might even be less given that we eat two snacks a day as well). Guess how much a double quarter pounder with cheese, fries, and a soda goes for at McDonald’s….? $6.69 (before tax) according to fastfoodmenueprices.com (thanks Google!). Wow.
What we don’t think about when we eat fast food is the long-term cost. If you ate McDonald’s every day, you would pay hundreds of thousands of dollars in prescription drugs and trips to the doctor during your lifetime because your health would deteriorate right out from under you. In the words of Dr. Rosanne Dektor, “You can pay for health, or you can pay for sickness, you get to decide.” She’s right! You can invest in your health by choosing to eat a healthy diet. Not only do you save money in the long run, you get to live your life feeling radiant and beautiful!
